This time of year we remember the founding of our country, and we at Cornerstone Living Library are so proud to have a good selection of books from that time period, in addition to biographies of the influential men and women of the American Revolution.
We wanted to highlight a couple to keep in mind the next time you’re hunting for book! The 4th of July Story by Alice Dalgliesh is a wonderful picture book originally written in 1956. Through delightful illustrations, this perfect read-aloud celebrates America’s beginnings, long before parades and fireworks. The engaging text captures the excitement and courage of the early Americans as they take the bold step toward freedom. This is the perfect book to summarize the whys of our Independence Day celebrations to the younger children in your house.
For the older kids, Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes (originally written in 1943) remains a classic for a reason. Johnny Tremain is a fictional silversmith apprentice in Boston and is a firsthand witness as the beginning events of the Revolution unfold. Readers will meet real people like John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Paul Revere as Johnny interacts with the Sons of Liberty. In addition to making history come alive, Johnny’s character arc and how he changes is powerful.
This book is especially on point if you plan to visit Boston, Massachusetts and walk the Freedom Trail!
We still are working on getting every book in our library tagged, but here is a start to finding ones about the American Revolution!
